Mina Werde Jewish Home for the Elderly and Orphans

The Jewish Home for the Elderly and Orphans was established by Leopold and Balbina Werde in memory of their only child, Mina Werde (1867–1887). It was founded in 1900 as the Home for the Aged and Disabled. After the construction of a second building, an orphanage was also created (after 1901). The Orphanage employed its own teachers, but the children of school age attended municipal schools or the School of Trades for Jews. On-site, the children learned handicrafts. A small garden was created near the orphanage, where the children grew plants. After the establishment of the ghetto, the institution was moved to 67 Garncarska Street. During the deportation to Treblinka in the fall of 1942, the institution was liquidated: the elderly were killed on the spot, and the children were transported to the extermination camp.
