The German authorities assigned this building outside the ghetto to house skilled Jewish craftsmen who worked for them, along with their workshops, staff, and families. Known as “Fourteen” or the “White House,” it became a secret passage for some to enter or leave the ghetto (a guarded gate in the courtyard was hidden from the street, and the Jewish guards could be easily bribed). Envoys from Jewish organizations in Warsaw and other cities, including Mordechai Anielewicz, later commander of the Warsaw Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB), stayed here.
