Rabbi Szajewicz’s Yeshiva

In 1902, Rabbi Majer Henoch Szajewicz (1873–1941) became a member of the rabbinical court in Częstochowa and the head of a yeshiva established by the local Jewish community. The school admitted boys starting at the age of ten, provided they were familiar with the Gemara. In this yeshiva, students continued their studies of the Gemara and its commentaries, the Bible, Hebrew language and grammar, as well as the state language and arithmetic. Rabbi Szajewicz’s time in Częstochowa was very productive, as he published many religious works, including Maor Chodesh (Light of the Month) and a Jewish calendar for a thousand years. In 1925, he moved to Palestine, and the school was closed.
