השלטונות הגרמניים הקצו את הבניין הזה מחוץ לגטו על מנת לאכלס בעלי מלאכה יהודים מיומנים שיעבדו עבורם, יחד עם בתי המלאכה, צוותיהם ומשפחותיהם. הבית, המכונה "ארבע עשרה" או "הבית הלבן", הפך למעבר סודי עבור חלקם להיכנס או לצאת מהגטו (שער שמור בחצר הוסתר מהרחוב, וניתן היה לשחד את השומרים היהודים בקלות). כאן שהו שליחים מארגונים יהודיים בוורשה ובערים אחרות, בהם מרדכי אנילביץ', לימים מפקד הארגון היהודי הלוחם של ורשה (ŻOB).
